But the drug's makers are saying the costs of Viagra, which they said was $2.8 billion, were a lot cheaper than the drug’s original cost. Pfizer also was in the market for the drug and has been testing it in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The price of the drug, however, is not the only factor to consider.
The FDA has also noted that Pfizer’s marketing of the drug has been aggressive.
“We are pleased that the FDA is taking steps to address the rising cost of Viagra and is working with other health authorities and the pharmaceutical industry to find an appropriate way to bring this drug to market,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb.
In a statement, the agency said: “The agency has been making significant progress in finding a solution to the high costs of erectile dysfunction.”
